Mitsui Chemicals Announces Organization Restructuring

Mitsui Chemicals, Inc. (“MCI”) (Toshikazu Tanaka, President & CEO) announced today that it will reorganize some operations effective October 1 2009 to respond to the challenges of the changing market environment, accelerate strength and expansion, and reinforce profitability while enhancing corporate value.

1. Purpose

(1) Strengthen Research & Development and New Businesses

  1. Accelerate development of new products targeted for commercialization within 2-3 years.
  2. Accelerate commercialization of large-scale next generation businesses in new market areas.
  3. Strengthen production technology structure to support (a) and (b).

(2) Strengthen Public Relations

  1. (a) Strengthen public relations to accelerate communication related to company management to stakeholders and enhance corporate value.

(1) Strengthen Research & Development and New Businesses

Purpose Changes
1. Accelerate development of new products targeted for commercialization within 2-3 years. Form [New Materials Development Center] (Responsible Officer: Akihiro Yamaguchi, Executive Vice President). Consolidate new product development functions of the Performance Materials Business Sector’s Development Center and the Research Center.
2. Accelerate commercialization of large-scale next generation businesses in new market areas. Form [New Business Development Division] (Responsible Officer: Toshikazu Tanaka, President & CEO). Accelerate new business commercialization and development of new business models.
3. Strengthen production technology structure to support (a) and (b) Consolidate [Technology Lab.] of the Performance Materials Business Sector’s Development Center and part of the functions of the [Development Dept.] in the Advanced Chemicals Business Sector with the Production & Technology Center.

(2)Strengthen Public Relations

Change
(a) Separate public relations functions from the CSR & Corporate Communications Division (Corporate Social Responsibility Center) and form a new Corporate Communications Division (Responsible Officer: Toshikazu Tanaka, President & CEO).
(b) Change name of CSR & Corporate Communications Division to CSR Promotion Division.

1 Dissolve [Quality Assurance Dept.] in Business Planning & Development of the Performance Materials Business Sector. Transfer quality assurance functions of the Performance Materials Business Sector to the Quality Assurance Division of the Corporate Social Responsibility Center
2 Form [Polymer Processing Dept.] in the New Materials Development Center. Consolidate all functions related to the development of polymer processing
3 Change name of the EOG Dept. in the Industrial Chemicals Division to [Industrial Chemicals Dept.]. Some products currently under the Fine & Performance Chemicals Division’s Specialty Chemicals Dept. (hydroquinone, resorcinol, etc.) will be transferred to the [Industrial Chemicals Dept.]. Enhance market and client synergy of EOG Dept. products with products such as hydroquinone, resorcinol, etc.
4Transfer functions of the [Process Safety & Disaster Prevention Technology Dept.] in the Safety & Environment Division to the Process Technology Center in the Production & Technology Center. Reinforce process safety synergy by consolidating divisions with related functions to optimize process safety technology.
5Form the [Collaboration Project Dept.] at Ichihara WorksActualize production optimization project in the Chiba area.
