Mitsui Chemicals, Inc. (Tokyo: 4183; President & CEO: Tsutomu Tannowa) cosponsored the Japanese championship of “FIRST LEGO League 2018-2019 (FLL 2018-2019),”*1 the world's largest robotics competition, and made a booth exhibition at the championship held on February 11.

Mitsui Chemicals cosponsored it a second time because we support FLL’s idea of “providing children with an opportunity to experience the excitement of solving issues in the real world while applying STEM concepts and Active Learning.

Following the FLL 2018 theme of INTO ORBIT, Mitsui Chemicals ran a booth exhibiting solar cell encapsulants that is manufactured by Mitsui Chemicals Tohcello, Inc. and used as a material in solar batteries for manmade satellites. The booth also served to showcase panels that similarly see use in solar batteries.

In addition, Mitsui Chemicals ran activities as part of its Laboratory Classes on the Wonders of Chemistry*2 program, this time conducting an endothermic reaction experiment with urea, that attracted many children to the booth. In having these children learn about the structures capable of converting light to energy, as well as the principles of how substances release and absorb heat when melting into water, Mitsui Chemicals hopes that the day will have served to pique their interest in science further.
