Basic Materials Business Sector

Basic Chemicals Business Sector handles the global manufacture and sales of phenols, acetone, bisphenol A, terephthalic acid, PET resin, industrial chemicals, and polyurethane materials.

These products are used in a wide range of areas such as engineering plastics and cushions for automobile, planes, and home appliances, clothing fiber, food and beverage containers, environmental protection such as purification of water and gases, and raw material used in the manufacturing processes of semiconductors and LCDs.

Phenols Division

Since the 18th century, phenol has been used as a disinfectant, and ingredient in pharmaceuticals and dyes. In modern times, it is used as the raw material for manufacturing bisphenol A and phenol resins.
Since acetone is both water and oil soluble, it is highly versatile and used in a wide range of applications as a solvent.
It is also used as a raw material for bisphenol A, MMA, MIBK, and IPA, as well as an ingredient in nail polish removers and adhesives.
Bisphenol A(BPA)
Bisphenol A is manufactured using phenols and acetone. It is an ingredient in polycarbonate resins used in DVDs and automotive parts, and epoxy resins used in adhesives.

PTA&PET Division

Purified terephthalic acid (PTA)
Purified terephthalic acid is a raw material in polyester fiber, the most widely used chemical fiber. PET resin is used as a substrate film in various industrial products, and PET bottles that are widely used as beverage containers.
Mitsui PET™
PET is manufactured using terephthalic acid and ethylene glycol. It is the raw material of PET bottles, various packaging materials, and containers used for beverages and condiments.

Industrial Chemicals Division

Urea is manufactured using ammonia. It is a white, odorless solid that is extremely water soluble. Urea is widely used in adhesives, urea resins, fertilizer, additives for denitration (AdBlue™, etc.), and in anti-freezing agents (Ice Melter).
Ethylene oxide
Ethylene oxide is manufactured using ethylene and is used as a synthetic organic material for ethylene glycol. The derivative surfactant is used in detergents and shampoos.
Hydroquinone is used as a raw material for a variety of chemical products such as polymerization inhibitor. Its raw material is used as antioxidant materials for rubber, agrochemical ingredients, and engineering plastic ingredients. PEEK resin made from hydroquinone is used in automotive and airplane parts for its high heat resistance and strength.
Nitrogen trifluoride
Nitrogen trifluoride is a high purity special gas used as a cleaning agent for semiconductor and LCD manufacturing equipment and as a dry etching agent.

Mitsui Chemicals & SKC Polyurethanes

It is possible to create polyurethane foam with a variety of characteristics from soft to hard, and they are light and have superior cushioning and heat resistance characteristics and are used in a wide range of areas such as automobiles and products for home use.
This resin uses plant-based materials (castor oil plant) and is used in seat cushions for automobiles, furniture, and bedding.
